Becoming Catholic - Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process for welcoming new members into the Roman Catholic Church. This enthusiastic and joyous journey happens within the faith community of St. Gregory. It is a personal journey for you, the candidate, to experience and discover Jesus Christ in your life.
The process begins in November and ends at Easter celebration the following year. There is a series of meetings in which the candidate, along with a sponsor, are required to partake. Discussions regarding the seven sacraments, the liturgical seasons of the year, prayer, the Eucharist and Reconciliation and the Bible are some topics, which are looked at.
The candidates grow in an understanding of the Church's teaching, interact with parishioners, participate in the celebration of the Eucharist and learn about Christian service.
Inquirers are invited to ask questions and share their stories as they hear the Good News and reflect on the place of God in their lives.
This all culminates with the candidate receiving the initiation sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation during the celebration of the Easter Vigil where they will be fully welcomed into the Roman Catholic Church.
There is sometimes much trepidation about becoming a member of the Roman Catholic Church. Know that RCIA can be an occasion, a journey, of great joy as the candidate asks for membership in the church. The faith community is looking forward to meeting you as we pledge our support to assist you on your journey.
